Can the self levelling shocks, be replaced with a regular type of shock?

The estate self levelling shocks are 'Boge Nivomats' & are used in many cars including Volvos, Alfa Romeos & Rovers to name but a few.

I for one am not convinced that 'Boge' would design a self levelling shock absorber exclusively for the Scorpio. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Scorpio estate is not the only car to use these exact shockers  Wink

The MK1/Mk2 Granada rear shockers, although they weren't self levelling, were very similar in design  Smiley

yep there are a few use them Jonny, I've never been able to find any others with the same bush mounting or confirm similar sizes/settings for others makes/models although the prices appear similar for all types.

I think i have found someone who has possibly repaired the internals of theirs though.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I ask is the car handles really badly when the rear goes over any uneven surface, it skitters about all over the place. It is probably made worse because I have 17' rims with low profile tyres. I have heard changing these shocks (if you can get them) is not so straight forward??

What worries me about buying used is that they may be no better than the ones I'm taking off....then again at 200 each...

Whats involved in removing them?? do I need a spring compressor ??

i dont use a spring compressor.

I remove the subframe bolts, disconnect the anti rollbar then lower the whole thing until theres enough room to get them out, the springs will fall out, just watch the brake flexipipes dont get stretched.

Are you sure its the shocks that are causing the problem?

Yes, I'm fairly certain its the shocks, I know it does no longer self levels. Its just like there is no dampening at the rear when going over manholes etc. the back of the car jumps about all over the place, I'll have a closer look today. How long does it take to remove the subframe?
