am i right in thinking that with the climate control set to auto, and the aircon light on, that the air conditioning will on cut in when required rather than runnning constantly? also is there anyway of stopping the climate resetting its self so that the aircon only comes on when i press the button rather that it being on each morning when i get in the car?

Yes it cuts in as required. No you can't stop the climate control resetting itself after it's been off for more than 1 hour. It needs to be used from time to time to stop seal damage so auto on is a good way of preventing this.
