hello one and all.

looking to get a scorpio i would like a 2.9 24v estate, i have read the guides to buying and found this on auto trader just wondered what you experts think?

Here

i think it is not all the dealer wishes it was, mainly because of the sun roof, reading the specs the ultima has climate control/ air con

had a 2.3 a few yrs ago and got bitten big time sold it on and only lost a few quid don't want to get bitten again.

if any one wants to sell their estate i would be interested, must be an estate as i have 2.4 childern and 2 dogs

also is there a big differance between the 2.9 24v and 12v heads, yes i know there are half the valves , i just wanted to know on performance and driveability, and can the 12v heads be swapped for a 24v heads with out to many probs.

looking at coming to the next midland meet

many thanks

No he heads can't be swapped easily.

12V's are good solid engines. Just have 50BHP less than the 24V which is quite a bit on a big estate with an auto.

Family Guy. The presence of a sun roof is not unusual. My ultima estate has climate control BUT still has a sunroof as there were certain options.

The 12v has lots of low down torque and is good for towing.. Fuel consumption of the 12v can be better than the 24v but the 12v is based on old technology used in the earlier granada, although they proved to be reliable strong work horses .. the 24v does have its foibles as members on here can vouch for . the one big thing is the timing chain rattle on start up, so well worth checking from cold.
IF the timing chains go its a complete engine rebuild and that is VERY expensive.

Read through the buyer s guide which is HERE

Do your homework and ask the right questions. Price IMHO is a little high as the car is a june 1997 one . but looks in good condition .

good luck

familyguy.
If you want reliable sturdy longevity you can't beat a 12valve,the only problem with it in the Scorpio is the poor engine loom quality which is not insurmountable, the transmission is a lot simpler as well, and gives far fewer niggles than the later electronic box.The driving experience with a 12valve is relaxing and it has a lovely wide torque band making for unfussed progress.
The 24 valve as you will know is a development by Ford via Cosworth using the basic but somewhat altered Cologne(12v)block,these engines are excellent whilst in their prime and properly maintained, but are an expensive nightmare to repair, even basic parts are becoming obsolete, for instance,I ordered an O/S chain tensioner LAST summer,Mr Ford is telling me(with some glee)that it is still on back order  Angry
Tread warily along the Cosworth road.

Yup, I think good 2nd hand parts are the future fir cosworth engines.

Still, at least you've got a big pile of chain bits now eh Gozz Smiley  just hope mine doesn't need anything soon Sad

Pretty sure most Scorpios came with a sunroof and AC or CC.
12v engine is a good robust unit - I've had several Fords with the Cologne V6 and have had very few problems with them. Can't really comment on the 24v version but I understand they can be costly to maintain in the event of problems such as timing chains.

If the 12v engine has recieved regular oil changes it will run quite happily for years. I've had 3 12v engined cars now (1 x scorpio & 2x granadas) & all were excellent. My last granada decided to throw in the towel after nearly 200,000 miles & despite No1 piston giving in it's notice it still ran on 5 cylinders for weeks before i decided to do the descent thing & send it to the big scrappy in the sky  Cry

I have a frontera 2.4 petrol for a family car at the moment  so high fuel consuption is not new ground,  my car is a mazda mx6 (2.6 v6) again frugel it ain't.
just want a bit more comfort in my old age the frontera is very noisey and not that comfortable we have also spent nearly a grand on repairs and i have said no more,

what sort of price should i be aiming to pay for a

2.9 24v  ,  2.9 12v   or a   2.3 16v?

found a 2.9 24v just want i wanted colour spec ect but the dealer wanted £2500 which i just cant justify onn such a car that is 2001 passat money.

Depends what you're willing to pay, someone might think the £2500 was reasonable (I dont) just ask the car dealers what they'll give you for your Scorpio as a trade in, they REALLY dont want to touch them, cant shift them at all. Wink

I'm just going on what I've seen come and go over the last year or so, maybe prices are dropping, I see Aardvark has just bought a lovely facelift 24v on ebay for just under £900 which looks great value.

I bought my facelift 24v 4 years ago for £1500 so thats not a lot of depreciation Smiley

Depends how much you want it I suppose.

I bought a turbo diesel Ultima off ebay for £80, you were done! Wink
