Could someone confirm correct procedure for checking auto box fluid level - does it matter if in D or P? I can't see very clearly on the dip stick either, is it just me?

Never check the fluid when the gear selector lever is in D... ONLY IN "P " or "N" But NEVER in D. you could get run over........

Jeff, I have your PM. Have a read of THIS page and scroll down to Transmission. It sounds as though a scan would be helpful so ask if there is a member in your area who could do one for you.

Having difficulty in seeing the fluid on the dip stick is a GOOD sign - means the fluid must be red or pink. Dark brown or black would be a BAD thing. Unless of course the level is below the dipstick, in which case that is also BAD!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think the reason I was unclear is that the checking method didn't specifically say select P. Years ago we had a Daimler V8 and I'm pretty sure the method on that was to select drive momentarily and then P - a couple of times before looking at the dip stick. Mind you that was a quite different gearbox of course, a D1, D2 type from Borg Warner I think, very good design but now ancient technology. My problem is getting worse so I think I need some OBD diagnostic help. Anyone near Woking Surrey who can help?
