Replacing the chains is an expensive job .. even if you do it yourself... there is a full write up on the main site.. HERE There are several guides on the main site and I am sure others on here will be in touch ....
I think even the prices will have gone up IF you can still get ALL the parts...

Do you know what oil and when it was last changed?. The first thing is the filter which should be a Ford one or a good quality pattern part. They have a 'non return' valve in them which prevents all the oil draining back. The oil should also be the correct grade. You don't say how long you've had the car or its maintenance history.

The short rattle is caused by the hydraulic chain tensioners,one each side,draining overnight,particularly I understand,the offside one.Most 24v engines do it at some stage.You can avoid the morning rattle by jamming the accelerator to the floor ,in which position the engine will not start,and cranking it over until the oil light extinguishes.Just as a matter of interest I have had a tensioner on order since last summer,it is still on back order

Do as Gozz reconmends and they can rattle like that for ages. Colleague had one that started to rattle at 60k - he sold it at 120k with the same rattle with just regular oil and filter changes being done.
If you can hear a rattle at about 90mph / 3500rpm then do something about it!

had car few months, no service history. whats correct grade of oil? car has been started every day this week and chain rattle seems to have gone! shes done 120200 miles on a 97 r reg. these things really go well!!!!!!!!!

Yes as Simmo says 5w30 will fill the bill,Cossies should have fully synthetic oil as they are a high performance engine and need to stand the caning they would get on autobahns and by gung ho traffic police ! For our use, indeed the modern semi synthetic 5w30 does the job.

thanks for quick response guys, now got transmission oil leak!!!! looks like torque convertor seal. slight drip(wife says, lt like me) gearbox out but can it be done at home or expert job? and loads of cash!

Yes that's it.
You have to remove the box, then the torque converter just slides off & you can get at the seal.
Not too bad of a job as long as stuff don't break 
& Remember to drain the auto oil.
As for timing chains oil changes are the key, neglect them & the rattle starts.
Once the rattle starts you are causing damage to the chain guides & cogs.
Do upto 3 oil changes close together to try & stop the rattle.
If that fails remove the tensioners & clean the one way valves in them.
If that fails fit a oil pressure gauge & monitor the oil pressure.
If that is O.K then you have a broken guide so the front of the engine needs work 
As for oil well you have a 1950's designed bottom half engine with a 80's design top half so a oil is always going to be a compromise.
10w 40 Semi Syth would be my advice.
Bottom end has high tolearances compared to modern engines so needs a thickish oil.
The oil will also help the tensioner do it's job.
Drain off 10W 40 oil & replace it with fully Syth 5W 30. The first thing you notice is the engine makes more noises, that's not good 
On a + point engines run on fully Syth are nice & clean inside
