Hi Guys, a while ago I replaced a faulty sender unit with new but when offering up the new one, it just kept turning, and would not tighten up fully, at that time I sought advice from this forum and was advised to use plastic metal , which I did this was some eighteen months ago and no problems but I have always been uncomfortable with this repair and have just managed to source a good inlet manifold, of which the sender unit is still attatched, on inspection its obvious that the sender unit screws into a recessed brass nut, the question I should like to ask,is why when trying to tighten, did the unit keep on turning,my logic is that the thread has stripped in the brass nut, if this is the case could I not withdraw it and use pipe thread to rectify this problem, anyway your comments would be most interesting.

It’s more of a hollow bolt (can’t think of the proper name) with a tapered thread on it that has a fine (.5 mm) saw tooth thread on it, but it’s pushed in because the hex recess for the head prevents it being screwed in, the saw tooth thread resists pulling out. Chances are the hex recess has given way, so it revolves. The sender has a tapered thread & should only be nipped up otherwise the manifold can be damaged/split. I use PTFE tape to seal the thread on the sender.
