Autobox replacment Ultima

Im back and still got my Ultima with broken autobox, seems best way is to buy a box and find cheapest fitters. Prob is many not interested in this car. I got offered a box on here bit it was bit far, found one on ebay in Goole with a good description £40 but he wants to sell it outside ebay to save costs, my prob is i told  him i about a part i bought from ebay last week from similar company, but went outside ebay to pay by card over phone for immediate postage, the item was broken, they knew and told me hard luck basically. The autobox guy returned an email to that making it clear that i buy at my own risk, he stated cant give any guarantee from 15 yo cars despite the fact its says from a 1998 car? this is the item if anyone can give me their thought on this, regards Andy.   http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220417013359&am p;ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Where are you and which Scorpio is the autobox for ?
Try putting another message in the parts wanted section in the hope that someone nearer to you may have one.
Also try some of the internet based breakers - http://www.breakeryard.com/ for example - enter what you want and they come back to you with availability & price.

hi there

tell him you will pay his ebay costs. won't be that much for £40 listing, maybe £5-£10.

that way you have some protection.

i dealt with rsbreakers before. bought my leather interior from them, no complaints although they forgot to mention that the seat-belt pretensioners were blown, thank god i had a good set from my old cloth interior Wink
anyway the seats were the cheapest I could find at that time and were in immaculate condition...
I took a risk and dealt with them outside Ebay but using paypal and there were no probs...

Which box do you need, where are you based, give us a clue then someone will help.It is advisable never to fit a box which has not been checked over by an auto transmission engineer, the job is lengthy and not worth the double trouble of doing twice !! Best to get a spare box, ignore all descriptions, don't pay too much for it,take it to a specialist, when OKd by him,if you are not in the position to DIY,find a proper small garage to change it for you, could cost £200 though  Roll Eyes

Pay attention Gozz Wink

Autoboxes are difficult, I dont think its worth putting a new box in a Scorpio but with second hand you pay your money and take a chance, paypal gives you a bit of protection if the box doesnt work but getting your £40 back for the box after paying someone to put it in wont be much comfort.

If you can find someone breaking a car or even selling a car with a good box you can test before it is removed then thats your best bet i think, unless you find someone really trustworthy Smiley

I've seen Spike's Scorpios selling a reconditioned box on ebay... it might be worth asking them if they have anything in your price range...

and11.....Ideally you will need to know how many miles the gearbox has done before you take a gamble & buy it  Wink

I notice that the one this breaker is selling only says that it was working fine, it doesn't state the mileage of the vehicle that it came from. I'd be a bit wary about buying one so cheap as there is no guaranty that it will last very long. Personally I'd make sure I knew exactly the mileage of the vehicle it came from as fitting an autobox isn't cheap & you don't want to be paying out to have it changed again a few months down the line  Smiley

Right guys, thanks very much for all ur advice. Gozz, i'm rekindled by your advice, the car was an excellent drive and £200 to fit would be worth it, if only i cud get the trustworthy box. i been in touch with this ebay fella couple of times, i made a ' best price ' offer twice. No reply, just a message with a personal email addy to arrange pickup, but making thing clear that it's my risk so i'm gonna look elsewhere. NoNo  on May 28th, 2009, 11:58pm, gozz wrote:
