hi after getting the advice about converting a 24v to a manual instead of putting a differnt engine in to increase the power, so what i need to know is...

what sort of box do i need.
what do i do about the clutch  etc.
would i need to get the car re registerd with the dvla because it is now a manual.
how does this effect the mot and insurance
and what is the cost and can i do this myself or would i need to get a garage to do it.

cheers for any advice.

Hi

I am working on the same conversion just now, not going in a Scorpio though.
You need the front end from a Sierra 4X4 box and the back end from a diesel box, plus the longer input shaft from the 4X4 box.
I think you will also need a different flywheel, and the clutch will be cable operated although it is possible to have it converted.

Have fun  Grin

the input shafts are the same size, so you can use the diesel one and save the hassle of changing it

you'll need the diesel prop shaft and vss

you can pinch the diesels hydraulic clutch set up to, but the pedal box isnt a direct swap, nor is the cable setup from the sierra

flywheel you can use a 2.9 or a 2.8 from the sierra, (2.8 is lighter both are 6 bolt fitment and you have to have the flywheel bolts and the ones used for the auto arent long enough) and an escort cosworth clutch set

price wise my box has cost about £350, but its been modded for the hydraulic thrust bearing, new bearings and seals and a new dough nut

oil wise best to use dex 3 auto fluid, better at higher temps and doesn't through

electrically you cant just dump the auto box and bolt on the manual. The ecu needs some signals back from the auto box and the reversing switch connection is different so cut the connector off the diesel if you can

i used to work for ford so i have driven many of there cars, it was when the scorpio was first released and all though every one was saying they looked horrid i had a soft spot for the scorp. the 24v does drive very nice but it has a auto box, if i could get a manual i would but the only way i can see it happening is if i do the conversion myself or as my other post change the engine in a 2.3 for something with more power
