Recommend A Rebuilder?

Engine is almost out the donor car and it’s time to decide what I am going to do with it! Can anyone recommend a good but reasonably priced engine rebuilder for the 24V BOB engine? Google comes up with nothing and the two local rebuilders that I have spoken to have refused to touch it, one of them told me he didn’t have the manpower to do such a large job Cheers Colin

'such a large job' what sort of engine re builder is he. send it to me I'll do it, but why does it need re building, the other problem is availability of some of the parts now.

Not a very good one by the sound of it The engine has came from a high mileage car, 170,000, probably been a taxi at some point in its life, non runner and two of the core plugs have popped out. Of course I didn't find this out until I got it up here. There is a broken wire to the EDIS unit which would explain the non running, there has also been a new radiator fitted at some point. What I think has happened is the engine has overheated because of a broken radiator and when they have changed it they have broken the wire to the EDIS unit. It has been filled with water and no antifreeze, been left to sit over the winter and it has frozen popping the core plugs. Long story short, I want it pressure tested to make sure it’s not got a cracked block, I also think it will need new big end shells, reground crank, probably a rebore and new pistons, new valve guides, new valves and springs and probably cams, new gasket set and of course timing gear and an oil pump. I have been unable to find any company who wants anything to do with a BOB engine, lots will do the BOA but none for the BOB. The engine is going to get mounts made and fitted to my chassis as soon as it is out of the car, which gives me about five weeks to find a company brave enough to tackle the work. Cheers Colin

BOB rebuild could be very expensive If it was me, I'd look for another engine - buy a complete Scorpio 24v MOT failure for a couple of £100 quid. You should be able to recoup most of your outlay by selling the bits you don't want on ebay or here.

That's what I have done, and it was always my intention of having the engine rebuilt with new bits before it goes in the Viento. There are pistons, conrods, valves etc available it only seems to be the timing gear that is a problem and someone to do the work Why does nobody like these engines, is it because they didn't make enough of them? They are such good engines with such potential and nobody does anything for them. Cheers Colin

| BOB engines are much worse, less reliable etc. then BOA and have a more screwed up design that's probably why nobody wants to touch them.

I like it, quicker just cutting your wrists though I am actually putting it in this http://www.luegosportscars.com/viento.htm and hopefully with a turbo on it if I can find someone to rebuild the engine. Cheers Colin

Ah right, just seen your other post about gearbox. Thank goodness for that. I know us Scorpio owners have a couple of screws loose but that would have been suicidal lol

| Well if you're a Japanese car manufacturer then yes the point of an upgrade/update is to make things better... Apparently if you're Ford it's not always like this. You must ask somebody who owns a BOA engine about the availability of the parts...

The BOA is generally the preferred option as its more common, less complicated, cheaper and easier to modify. There's no reason why the BOB cant be used but its probably that bit more untried.. I've talked to a few people who have used the BOB in various conversions and a few (not all) reckoned if they did it again they would use the BOA Colin, have you talked to CyberBeej? Also have you been on this forum yet? http://fordpowerorguk.slarti.myfreeforum.org/

there is/was a general saying about the 2 engines the BOA was a 12v fitted with cosworth heads the BOB was a cosworth engine ford never let them develop fully hence it's radical top end but near identical bottom end and little after market parts

Thanks for all of your ideas and help, it really is most appreciated and it's great to have someone to talk to before you make stupid mistakes. I have found someone to do the rebuild for me, Mike at Boost Power, so that is a result, I had nearly given up hope for BOB and was thinking of dropping this in, [url]http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Mustang-4-6-V8-Engine-new-with-Tremec-gearbox-5spd_W0QQitemZ170346266685QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item27a96dc03d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1689%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50[/url Boost Power has probably saved my life Thanks again Colin
