changing the carpet seems to be the only solution that will actually work... you can try giving it a good scrub with a deep penetrating foam used for carpet cleaning like vanish or something... in the worst case you can use one of those powders used for getting rid of animal smells from textiles... but it sounds like an extreme idea ROFL

Sure there's a product on the market where you can put something on the carpet and upholstery. ( if you have velour seats ) leave it there for half an hour then vacuum it up ............ Wink

The damp "smell" is caused by (as you know) moisture.

aircon gets rid of moisture.

Does your aircon work and has it been cleaned recently ? (pollen filters changed etc)

I had the very same thing in my old Granada,(no aircon)
I tried two options to get rid of said moisture, both of which absorbed it.

1) A small container* of salt (tupperware*) underneath the passenger seat. (not a brilliant success)

2) A small throw away de-humidifier that has moisture absorbing granules inside it (£1 shop jobby)
Something like this e-bay item # >  120420986596

I used two and had a degree of success being that both were half full of water within a month.

You could try sprinkling some bicarbonate of soda on the carpets & leaving it for a few hours  Smiley

Neutradol carpet deoderizer is pretty good stuff as well  Smiley

I would have thought the smell was coming from either the A/C easily cured with one of the in car fumigating products, or as you rightly state damp/wet carpets.. Why not take them out and dry them out completely and then treat them to a good cleaning .
I did that with one of my previous cars when it had a leak on the winscreen . Cured the problems of the smell .

the problem occured when the front passenger side plastic cover came adrift and allowed water to leak into the car hence soaking the carpet, will try all sugestions carpet is completly dry so will try powder, neutrodol route first, and as a last resort the long and time consuming job of carpet removal.

The carpet may well feel DRY but I have found on many occasions that the under felt can still be wet somewhere in the middle and starts to rot, which causes the smell.
Good luck anyway.
