Just looking round and saw on auto trader a silver auto diesel. Bit prcey but looks good. What are they like to live with (diesels that is) and what merits, if any, over petrol versions? Thoughts appreciated.

A bit harsh IMO, I find the 2.5 diesel fine for everyday driving.
Sure it's no Cosworth, but then again it doesn't use fuel like one either  Wink

We have two diesels on the road, plenty torque and pretty quick for a big car, havent had any great problems with them either.

plus they run great on veg oil  Grin

The auto diesel was a VERY rare Scorpio, just introduced before the end of the production run, my only worry would be the availability of second hand, auto diesel specific spares as Ford are now discontinuing a lot of parts.

As for it not being a good engine , dont tell Ford, Toyota, Rover, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Opel, Jeep etc Who have been using the same basic VM diesel for years Wink

hi there

can we only post on personal experience of the scorpio variants and not on what could be viewed as hearsay,
IE other peoples opinions on various websites that can't be verified.

Sounds rather like the forceful self opinion of a Jeremy Clarkson character  Sad
Never having run one I could not opine on it's attributes or otherwise, however many people I know have owned them and I don't recall any derogatory speak regarding the engine,on the contrary, two chaps used them for caravan work and swore by their torquey reliability  Wink

Andrew I've owned [actually it was my dad] an Alfa 164 with the very same engine... The car was bought brand new and was on the road in total for maybe 2 months, rest of the time it spent in the garage cause there was always something wrong with the engine and the automatic gearbox, after 6 months my dad made them take the car back and give him a new one, this time with a petrol engine... there were no probs. with the petrol one...

Regarding Alpha Romeo, I would suggest blaming

 the builder not the bricks.

the car itself never had any problems, it was the engine and the gearbox that were it's weak points... anyway Waglet, you'll do what you wish but firstly google everything about the engine as it really is crap...

Think you'll find the worst ever diesel engine was that american 6 litre V8 diesel (think it was a GM lump) - capable of providing low teens in fuel economy and delivery a MIGHTY 100bhp in return - its beleived that this engine on its own was resposible for decimating diesel car sales in the US for over 50 years Smiley... beats the ol' VM lump hands down  Grin

From what I know of the 2.5 TD scorps, the owners seem overall happy with their steeds.  One day when funds and time allow, i plan to see if i can lever one into the front of a transit Smiley
