Crank shaft sensor

Hi. The Scorp is back at long last. However I'm not 100% convinced all will be well. Long story short....had non starting problems earlier in the year, turned out to be fuel pump sender (or similar). Was told this time that I'd had a new crank shaft sensor (delay being getting hold of one from Ford. apparently Ford kept sending a Lambda sensor?) Any way car is back but my question is "what does a crank shaft sensor do and what symptoms would a dodgy one give?" Also can they be "intermittently" faulty? Cheers

The info is on this page......http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/eecv.htm Also a dodgy crank shaft sensor would prevent the engine from firing
