If its any help my 2.8 was a bast**d for this then we twiged how to do it . . .
First find out how many litres it holds
Then fill watering can with same amount jack the front of car up as high as possable (and safely) put heater to hot start engine and slowly fill her up  this forces the water to the lower end  ( gravity is a wonderfull thing ) and the air to the top . Other wise my top hose was pressurizing with air

Mine was a pig it kept air locking untill i did this trick

Is the rad a 2nd hand one ?....If so, it could be that it is blocked or restricted.

Might be a good idea to do as Gazza recommends....find out how much the cooling system holds (cossie should hold 8.5 litres), then use a measuring jug to put that amount in. You should be able to easily get 8 litres in, then run the engine to expel any air & top up with 1/2 a litre.

I bought a 2nd hand rad a couple of years ago & after fitting it I could only get 6.5 litres in the system (should take 7.5 litres)  Huh....I ran the engine until hot & felt around the rad & parts of rad weren't getting hot, meaning some of the vains were blocked/restricted  Roll Eyes
