TD Alternator query

Hi all, this weeks scheduled breakdown with my TD is the alternator The red light has been glowing dimly on and off all week, voltage checks at the alternator shows that it isn't charging when the ignition light is on. My quick question is did Ford fit this alternator with the pump on the back to anything else? I seem to recall that our old Ford powered Metrocab had something similar but it's probably just as hard to find one of those in the local breakers as a TD Scorpio! Cheers, Jim

Thanks for the input guys. Highlander, I'll nip down to the local breakers on Sunday and see if they have anything, failing that I'll give you a shout if you manage to find your spare. Funnily enough, I'm sure the Metrocab used the transit DI engine, probably why that alternator looked familiar! Cheers Jim

Well things just got a bit weird, the TD alternator issue has just self cured! The red light has been more on than off most of last week until it went out on Saturday night & has behaved itself since. I'd checked and cleaned the connections when the fault first appeared, to no avail. When the red light was on, I put a volt meter from the alternator big terminal to the body and it wasn't charging so I assumed a faulty alternator. I've never had one that has started to work again so any ideas what else it might have been? Cheers, a very confused Jim

It really depends on the readings you collected during driving. If it jumps fom let's say 13.5 to 0 and on again, suspect regulator pack coal, or bad contacts. Serviceable easily, but a pain to find the correct part. I got hold of one once to realize it had other problems as well, and for this you really need to know the exact model of the alternator. If it never reaches nomal output, and drops dramatically under load, suspect regulator pack. This can be fixed but seldom worth it.
