Newbie says hi!

I am the proud new owner of a 1998 2.3 Estate Ghia X Auto. Just put it through a new MOT which it passed with flying colours. However it does have a couple of issues! Namely the temp gauge does not work. The air coming from the heater smells It only seems to have two front speakers working. If anyone know anything about these that would be great to know but other than that and some slightly beaten up bodywork she drives brilliantly. Are there any sensible mods? Cruise? Climate control? Power/economy? Ipod? Anyway, cheers Jon!

The temp guage not working may be down to a faulty sender. It's located in the thermostat housing at the front of the inlet manifold & it's the sensor with the square plug As for the air smelling...is it a kind of curry smell ?....If so, then it's sounds like the heater matrix has sprung a leak. Check the passenger side footwell for wet/damp carpet to confirm. Good luck & welcome to the site

| Thanks! Is that on the drivers or passenger side? Sorry not too mechanically minded! Will check carpet later but i think it's more of an old burning oil smell, it seems worse on re circ and the car just passed it's emissions without any problems at all and does not have blue smoke anywhere. I wondered if there was a pollen filter whether it might have shizzle stuck in it but can't find the filter! Cheers for your help! Jon

It's the passenger side you need to check. The pollen filter can be checked/ removed/replaced from the engine bay by the windscreen wiper motors under the centre of the windscreen. Just lift up the black flap and you will be able to see them.

The temp gauge may also be a sign that your instrument cluster need resoldering. Best to check that is to hit the dashboard right above the gauge when the engine is running and hot and see if it lifts a bit or maybe even to 50%. If so, you need to take it out and resolder.

| While you're at it it's worth cleaning the ventilation system using some sort of Air Conditioning Cleaner. E.g CRC makes a foam that is sprayed on the evaporator fins behind the pollen filter.

Another way to check the actual temp guage is working okay is to pull off the plug on the sender & short the two connections in the plug together with a piece of wire. With the ignition on, the gauge should rise fully into the red. If it doesn't then it's a gauge or wiring fault & if it does then it's a sender fault. The sender is arrowed in this picture ......
