Exact dimensions of estate shock absorber bush

I'm in the middle of a discussion with a representative at a polyurethane bush manufacturing company.

I'm enquiring the possibility to have estate shock absorber bushes made. For this, I would need to know *exactly* what are the dimensions of:

The hole in the shock absorber, how thick the outer metal ring of the bush is, the inner hole diameter (or the diameter of the bridge mount), and the width of the bush. It might also be a stock item would fit, sold as something else.

Considering what this can save owners in trouble/cost, hopefully someone could check these parameters with good measuring gear. I do not have an estate myself so I have no chance of doing it.

I was surprised of how few were needed to be made to make production economically feasible. I don't think I'm allowed to tell how many yet in public, but it was not an impossible figure.

Definately interested.

What is the minimum qty you would need to order & price per pair ?

I need the dimensions to get any sort of quote, but based on the picture the sales rep said 100pcs is needed to make production economically feasible. That's 50 pairs, probably a 1000 scorps have been scrapped because new shocks aren't justified costwise.

I have a spare pair of these shocks in the shed - what dimensions do you need ?
The bush seems to have a steel outer, pressed into the bottom mount - or is that part of the mount ? One problem could be the metal bar which goes through the bush as it has flats each end which are wider than the hole in the bush  Huh

hi there

the steel outer is part of the bush.

the metal bar pushes out with a bit of force, but it's not too hard on a worn bush.

that's the bit that wears and fails the MOT.

The steel frame is part of the bush. You could measure the ring "eye" that is part of the shocker. I think it's better to take the measurements from everything else than the bush to derive the bush size.

But I will also need to know how thick the steel ring of the bush is. A picture that helps is below:

I believe the bridge mount is easy to manufacture, just push in a pipe and squeeze the ends and drill holes.

You can measure width of the actual bush. Measure the length of the bridge mount, it's diameter, and the distance between the mounting holes (where the pipe is flattened). Of course the bolt size could be good to know.

If you can help me out on this I think I can get a quote from the manufacturer.

Not sure if anyone knows or is interested, but the bushes are actually moulded around the steel mounting pin & then pressed into the bottom casing ring  Smiley

Is the mounting pin solid metal or a tube that's been flattened at the ends  Huh

How easily does the bush come out of the bottom mount ?

The pin is solid metal & an easy way to get the bush out is to burn it out, unless you've got a good bush removal tool or a press  Smiley

I kinda thought the pin would be solid.

When I mentioned removing the bush from the bottom mount, I meant in a non-destructive way ( i.e. NOT burning ! ) - do you need a press to get the metal tube out  Huh
There I think lies the main problem - to get bushes cast in polyurathane would need a mould in which you have a piece of steel tube the correct size, the pin already inserted and then pour in the polyurathane...so it could end up being a case of the bushes being made to order on an exchange basis with you supplying the pins  Huh

Wouldn't be too difficult to make up a mould and get some correctly sized steel tube but I have no idea where you get the polyurathane compound from  Huh

But then again, please correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't thick steel tube  be stronger than a solid cast? The company makes a lot of different suspension bushes, I guess malking these wouldn't be any problem for them.

Polybush make them all sizes.

Two top hat bushes or a single cotton reel one should do it.

You'd just need to fabricate a new centre bar the width of the flats or grind the old one down to fit.

Actually, now that it's mentioned, Polybush is the company I've discussed with. But I have no measurements yet to take the issue forward with them.

I've made contact with a UK company which does poly bushes - anyone got a spare bush, any condition, to send in for a sample ?
