You might be able to fish the loose thing (if it's a rock in it etc.) out via the filler pipe connection without removing the tank. The tank is quite easy to remove, but you should make sure you have new straps available on short notice when you take it off. You can't really remove the sender unit without dropping the tank. If you remove the sender unit, always put a new gasket.

Are you sure it's inside the tank? The tank forms a handy shelf seen from the middle of the car towards the rear. A rock can be easily trapped up there.

As tlundkvi said...are you sure it's in the tank ?

If you fill it to the brim, does it still make a rattling noise ?.....Things don't tend to rattle that much when immersed in liquid  Wink

Have you checked under the spare wheel for anything loose ?  Smiley

Removing tha tank can always be a nice surprise. I had a leak, the tank looked nice and clean from below, but the shelf I mentioned (the highest point of the tank, and further to the lower part that is towards the spare wheel housing) traps water and dirt really easily. Hope it doesn't look like this:

Hi everybody and thanks for your help. I must admit the rattle is more noticeable when the tank is between quarter full and empty. I have had everything possible checked at the backend and nothing visible is loose.

That is correct. However, since mine was changed  (Klokkerholm pattern part), my tank sensor shows 13 litres too little across the range, which messes up the whole fuel computer. It could be the tank shape, it could be the guy who installed it bent the arm, but surely not looking forward to take it down to fix it.
