Hi Does a Scorpio have two of these one for passenger and driver? I only ask because if you change the heat level on the Drivers side you can hear the fan change speed but this does not happen on the passenger side.... Cheers Jon

Drivers side takes priority and will be controlling the blower settings so the passenger side cannot affect it

So just buy a can of veg oil and pour it in? How does it run? Does the engine need any mods/servicing etc etc?

I collect used oil from the local indian take away and let it settle and filter it but if you buy new unused stuff from a supermarket you can pour it straight in , the Scorpio diesel is an ideal engine for it. Ideally it recommended you have a heater system fitted to heat the oil before it enters the pump but i've been running mine just in standard Scorpio diesels and they run fine, need to mix it with diesel in the wintertime as they can be hard to start in cold weather running on oil only but the rest of the time i run 100% veg oil. As for the running, i'm still convinced the engines run quieter and better on the veg oil, and the smell!! its just great

Hi Jon, I ran mine on used veg oil by filtering it clean. The VM engine in the Scorp is very veg tolerant and will happily run high percentages, providing the heater plugs and injectors are in good condition. In the summer months I was running 100% waste oil and adding 5 or 10% unleaded petrol to the oil in the winter. (5% petrol thins the oil by the same amount as 40% diesel) The only mod I made to my car was fitting a flat plate heat exchanger which used heat from the coolant system to warm the veg oil and prevent the filter waxing up in cold weather. I did 30K on used veg oil with no problems and saved a fortune in fuel costs I'd recommend having a look at an excellent forum if you are interested, there are details on various filtering set ups there too, if you decide to go down the waste oil route. http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/ If you are using fresh oil from the supermarket or cash & carry, there is no need to filter first. The only thing to watch out for is that you might experience a couple of blocked fuel filters in the first few hundred miles, this is due to the veg oil cleaning out any crud that might be in your diesel tank Cheers Jim

Another tip if you go collecting waste veg oil.. chip shops rarely have used oil, going by the ones I enquired at they just constantly top it up as it burns off or is sold in your chips Chinese takeaways also rarely have any as it is apparently used in large quantities to make chinese curry!! that put me off beef currys!! Indian restaurants which sell purely indian food give the best waste oil to work with, very little fat content compared to those which also do hamburgers, kebabs etc took me a while to work that out but it saves a lot of time if you get good stuff to work with Also, every now and again they make a big batch of garlic and coriander pakora which gives the exhaust a lovely smell

Aren't there customs and excise duty pitfalls in doing this? I'm sure I read somewhere that they get a tad upset if you don't do things by the book and pay some duty even on waste oil? David

You need to keep records of what you are doing/using but as Jon says you are allowed up to 2500 litres per year before you start to incur duty

It's a 2500 ltr limit on new oil, waste oil & biodiesel, all you have to do is keep records but there is no need to register with the Customs & Excise unless you are using over the 2500ltr limit
