16v 2l diff. Limited slip or not

Can anyone shed some light on my diff conundrum? My 1995 auto 16v 2L estate has got a poorly diff. a company that rebuilds them tells me it is a limited slip one which is twice as much to repair as an ordinary one; the main dealer doesn't know or care. This one was from a breakers in 2002 and I don't remember the limited slip issue then. The diff is still in the car at the moment but the issue of cost is one that I have to consider before I decide to get started on the job. Thanks Gazz. Wolverhampton.

Wouldn't bother getting it repaired, just get another one from a breakers.

I've looked all over the web for a used one but they are as common as hen's teeth. I can get mine rebuilt for about the same price as one from a breaker if it is not limited slip and I don't want to take it out until I have a replacement... my original question was, is it likely to be a limited slip one?

Based on the discussions at the forum, it is very unlikely. It won'tbe impossible though. A visit to Ford will give you a list of all factory options based on the VIN.

Well firstly I wouldnt be using that rebuild company, obviously they dont know what they are talking about! As tlundkvi says it COULD be LSD but i've never seen or heard of any Scorpio fitted with a LSD but they were available as an option. Plus if yours was from a breaker who is to say it doesnt have a Granada diff or modified diff fitted now. Jack the rear wheels off the ground and put it in gear, if both wheels turn the same way its LSD I have a spare 3.91 diff (not LSD) from a 2.3 if you get stuck although you would need the backplate off your own one as this is the later one with the double mount.

I've got my diff sorted It's been rebuilt and while they had the car they overhauled the drive shaft couplings; cleaned out checked and new grease. £200 all in. I think that's pretty good. Happy new year all
