Been having the seemingly fairly common fluctuating temp readings - OK at tickover - whilst driving goes down to just above cold and moves up and down a bit. In for service yesterday and asked for thermostat and temp sender check, mech said both OK but he did a coolant test and found exhaust gasses said def cylinder head gasket and it would cause the problem. No water loss or any trace of water in oil. Anyone recommend a good coolant additive.

The addition of additives is only a short term stop gap and from my personal experience in the past they never seem to work as they are alleged too. The gauge fluctuating in most likely due to the plug on the offside wing needing some cleaning with switch cleaner.. Its got a 10mm nut on the top undo and lift off good spray os switch cleaner and reassemble . then unplug it again do that a couple of times and then bolt it back up , that should stop the fluctuation on the readings... then see how the water loss goes .. if there does not appear to be any then the head gasket has not gone! IMHO The 12v is a very sturdy engine a does not seem to suffer from the head gasket problems of some of the others ... Its not a hard job to do either

IF your head gasket is leaking the only solution is a new head gasket (and the associated head skim if needed) I'm afraid. Additives are snake oil.

gemeg. As Snoopy points out the 12v is without doubt the toughest best proven engine of them all,I have run them for many years in funeral vehicles first in Granadas now in Scorpios. They take a lot of cooking, drivers have come back with split hoses and singing like a kettle, but owing to their all iron construction we have NEVER had head gasket failure.Had the same thing have happened to the four cylinder engines, there would have been a head off job without doubt. The temp gauge senders do deteriorate,I would hope that your mechanic is correct in what he says,it may be worthwhile you pulling off the wire and earthing it with the ignition on whilst someone watches to see if the gauge rises to the top,if it does the sender IS faulty,it only has one wire so it,s a simple operation. Im with Gozz on this one. I've had loads of 12v Granadas & Scorpios & have never experienced head gasket failure...I once had a con rod hand it's notice in but i was running laughing gas & was at 7500rpm when it had enough . I think a second 'sniff test' wouldnt be a bad idea ( from a different garage). Keep us posted

Clean off the excess fluid . get the leak fixed( MOST IMPORTANT) , clean the big plug on the offside inner wing ( the big square one) as described and see if that fixes the problem.
