Another leak

Hi Guys

Got another coolant leak this time it is a right pain to get at from the top so looks like I have to find someone to get her in the air.

The photo above is from the front looking down ito the engine (24v P reg).

The highlighted area shows where the leak is from where two pipes join at right angles behind the right hand hose clip as looking from the front.

(Pretensioner for Aircon is missing so you might not usually see it like this)

I have moved and tightened the hose clip which works for a while then the leak comes back. If I put my hand round the pipe I can feel the coolant coming out at the back.

I was lucky to have the following diagram sent me but cannot see this particular hose on it.

If the hose is perished anyone got an idea what I order?

Regards and Happy New Year to you all.

looking at your picture id say your car is fitted with the wrong waterpump, more then likely a 12v one

where that rubber hose fits, the water pump should be a straight out let towards the wing(not angled down like that) and the rubber hose should be at right angle facing back towards the rear of the car and into the thermostat located behind the aircon bracket

looking at what you have its a 'made to fit' 12v or 24v BOA (scorpio used BOB 24v) pump with some modification to the thermostat housing/plumbing also

Cheers for the reply.
Hoping to get some underside pictures tomorrow.
Found this picture library on here which I hope show what you mean and are definately different to what it looks like now:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/24vrebuildreassy.htm
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/waterhoseassy.jpg
(have included links rather than the original pics as they are not taken by me many thanks to the initial poster and the site in general for their usefulness)
I am hoping that the thermostat is right and just need to jury rig a temporary replacement single hose until can find right water pump.
Have seen this on ebay which says it fits the 24v but looks different to the one in the above link as it has a slight downward turn.

Anyone know the right part number?

Cheers guys

Got that sorted last week  with new pipe and pump (couldn't get any work done due to weather before). Then this morning as I pulled up at the train station there was a cloud of steam from under the bonnet.

Opened up and a load of coolant dumped on floor.  Looks to be coming from where thermostat is joined to the new pipe so hopefully just a case of a clip coming loose (was a pain to reach it initially).

Have got the AA to meet me after work as I don't have the kit on me today and will be asking them to check for head gasket leak (but the exhaust has not smelled sweet at all and have had a pressure tester hooked up showing constant pressure for 20 mins after fitting new pipe).

Assuming (and hoping) it isn't the head gasket causing over pressure what are the main other components to test given this is the fourth major coolant leak over the past 4 months (2 split hoses 2 leaks at connections).

Cheers

Do you know if your coolant tank cap is in good order ? If you are experiencing pressure in the coolent system i would give it a check. HTH... Craig  Smiley

new caps are very cheap from ford, about a £5er so wouldn't bother with testing it

a blockage in the engine could over pressure the system,

do you live in a hard water area? heater matrix get hot?

its possible having the wrong pump fitted that the wrong pump was stronger and its stretched the hoses

you deffo got the correct pump on it now?

Live in a lovely soft water area (Calgon must waste a fortune advertising here).

AA chap has checked it and at first couldn't see anything wrong. It looks like even with all the steam and coolant on the floor it had only lost about a cupful.  No signs of head gasket failure apparently.

But as soon as it got up to temperature we saw a pinhole leak in the pipe that comes from the engine to the top of the thermostat which looks like it is going to be an even bigger pain to get to.

Think might as well go back to original plan when the first hose went and try and replace all the hoses as they are all getting on now.  Have tried ford dealers though and they just saay they aren't made anymore and none in stock so back to square one.

Cheers

That hose is a problem particularly as it is smaller at the top than at the thermostat end,it passes through the front of the cylinder head casting and is rather an odd shape. The top end goes to the water rail between the heads, and there is only room for a narrow hose clip,I understand that as you say,it is now obsolete.Nothing is insurmountable of course, and with a little ingenuity and time the problem should be overcome. This type of project is not worthwhile for the repair trade to attempt as labour costs would be too high, therefore a measure of self help is necessary.

Looks like I may have got access to a garage and a mechanic mate who works for beer. So just to find the pipe.  Hmm... Sometimes get the idea that the designers not only wanted to compete with BMW etc for comfort but also for fiddlyness.

Hi Guys

Managed to get a brand new hose in the end.

I am still thinking of making one from two other hoses and putting pics on here for those of you who may have this problem in the future.

Many thanks to Gozz for sending me the one he did had enough detail so I could get a new one.

Has took two days to get on and I will post details as soon as I have calmed down. (Think the Iliad and you have some idea of the problems that came up).

Anyway there is now a new problem and the reason for all the hoses blowing may well be explained if we can figure this one.
Please see here for details of my next odysey:
