Diesel Starting Problem.

Quick question regarding a diesel scorpio.

Cold starting problem. Cranks over fine, but doesn't start.
If I give it a quick spray of easystart (I know I shouldn't use it) it will fire up straight away.

Heater plugs,  ok.
Fuel filters, ok
Battery 720amp, ok
Starter, ok

Starts fine when engine is warm or has been running a couple of mins.
It does occasionally start from cold, but not very often.
Started first time yesterday when it was -7 outside.

Anything else anybody can think of to check?

I had the opposite problem a few months back when it wouldn't start when hot. Turned out to be the injector pump. Sad

Yep, I removed them one at a time & checked them by earthing to the block & switching ignition on.
Heating up & glowing bright red.

Haven't checked them, but would that not affect running of car throughout IE, hot start, performance etc?

How much would a set of injectors be?

one of my diesels has a leaking seal on the fuel filter which caused the exact same problem as you described. once it had warmed up and expanded it was fine.

found that by pushing the primer it would help starting if it had been left a few days.

£1.09 for a new filter and 1 bolt always worth a try, just make sure the seals are clean and seated correctly. Might find the car has more power afterwards if the filter was clogged anyway.

Had a word with a friend of mine who has worked on diesels for many years (mainly land rovers)
He recons it's 99% a dodgy injector.

Seeing as they have done 202,000 miles he could be right  Grin

Going to price up a set tommorrow, & see what happens.

When I was a haulier one of the local diesel engineers reconditioned them,or to save downtime supplied a service exchange set.New ones never came into the equation as all the parts were available.

yep, I put two bottles through, didn't do a thing.

Had to bite the bullit & purchase a new set. Couldn't recon my set as they were scrap.

New set of injectors plus a couple of other little jobs I asked them to sort for me,
bill comes to £498 inc vat.

The original quote they gave me for injectors was wrong though. No 1 injector was the killer at £195  Sad

Still all done now, so should have more power & hopfully a bit better economy.
Will find out Friday when I pick the car up.

Dread to think how much I've spent on this motor so far  Tongue

Well, seems the new injectors have done the trick.....well almost !

Haven't used the car since collecting it from garage on Tuesday, so it's sat outside for 4 days or so.
Came to start it this morning & no good, turning over & good fuel supply but no fire.  Angry

Just about to phone the garage who done the work (it's a friend of mine so I have his personal number)
but I thought I'd just check the obvious things.

Seems someone had forgot to plug no.3 heater plug lead back on so it was only heating three cylinders !!
Plugged it in & fired up first time  Grin

Now it seems the next job on the list is the belt tensioner as it's just starting to make a noise  Roll Eyes
Always something isn't it  ROFL

Wouldnt have thought a single heater plug not heating should make a difference, are the rest definitely ok?

I've started a diesel on one heater plug in cold weather before, rough but it worked
