what are the correct tyres for the scorpio?
when i bought my car it had 225 50 16s continentals.i have just replaced them with 225 55 16s but have noticed a slight wheel arch buffing when going over speed bumps that i didnt get with the 50s.i know that they are a fatter tyre but i thought that the extra 10mm wouldnt have made that much difference

i suppose that will slow me down going over the bumps and the coil springsare probably well relaxed after 11-12 years anyway

BT,
225/50 x 16 & 225/55 x 16 have the same tread width so are not 'fatter' BUT the sidewall height is greater on the 55 than on 50 profile and therefore rolling radius is larger - I think this is where your problem of scuffing originates from.
The profile ( 50 / 55 ) is NOT mm but a percentage of the tread width.
Check out this website for all you ever wanted to know about tyre sizes and probably more...

Are you sure they are scuffing the wheel arches & not the inner wheel arch cover ?.....as stated before, the 55s are no wider than the 50s, just slightly larger in diameter/radius  Smiley

I've heard of people using 55s before & as far as I know they haven't caused any problems. Which is why I thought maybe the shocks/struts could be worn, causing the car to dip/rise a bit more than it should, hence causing the (taller) 55s to scuff the inner wheel arch covers  Smiley

P.S....According to the page that Simmo gave you & this page.... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/alloyoptions.htm ....the Scorpio never came with an original tyre size of 225/55/16. The only 16 inch 55s were with a 205 or 215 width  Smiley

Err.....I bought my car as an ex-demo when it was just a few months old way back in 1998. It is an Ultima 2.3 Auto estate and came with Continental 225/50 R16 92W as standard. I have fitted the same tyres ever since and never had a problem.

it is jonny.the plastic inner arch covers!i have just pulled them in towards the wing lip with my hands and that seems to have sorted the problem, especially athe rear ones.still get a slight scuff at the front which will slow me down over my local residential speed bumps.at least i know what it is and am glad its only the tyre rubbing on plastic instead of the metal arch lip.

thanks again lads
