Auto box problem

Hi all,

I have been a member on here for a while but not used it recently as I sold my last one 4 years ago and just brought another one.

My question is, I recently brought a scorpio 24v 1998 on a R reg. Today I replaced the auto gearbox oil and filter and on refilling with Fuchs Titan 3000 Dextron II oil. The problem is it does not seem to want to select gear easy. If I put it into reverse I have to rev it a few times until it goes into gear and the same for drive. The thing is before doing the change it was working fine. Has anyone got any ideas or advice please.

I changed the heater matrix 2 weeks ago and the heater works fine now at least there is heat in the car now.

Thanks for help in advance
Regards Michael

Hi Michael,

is there enough oil in it?

Did you replace the two 'O' rings?   They sometimes get a little bit hardened, so if you just put the old ones off the old filter back on, and either of them got only slightly damaged when pressing the filter home, then it would cause problems like you describe.   Remember they are two different sizes, and you can still get them from ford in packs of six I believe!   If either of the 'O' rings are missing, I wouldn't even expect the gearbox to select.   Bit of a b****r I know, it means taking the sump off again just to check.

Did you check the length of the filter bolt? The new filters need a shorter bolt or the old bolt packing out otherwise the filter wont seat onto the O rings.

Finis are 6152081 and 6117033, if not supplied with the new filter. You can buy them individually also.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the information and help. The thing is I was having a blonde moment and did not check the levels properly. I took out 3 and three quarter litres of oil, so I put the same back but it needed 5 litres. Once again thanks for your help I will check better in future.
