Estate Roof Rails ?

I have a cunning plan but I'm a bit I intend to remove the black "paint" on a pair of roof rails I have, I will be using paint stripper but am concerned about what looks like a fibre washer in between the rail and the ends, I am thinking about removing the washer in case it gets destroyed. (The rails I have are a spare set and have already been removed from an estate) I have seen the above done on another Scorpio but I can't get in contact with the guy that done it for his advice. So does anyone know if the two ends on each rail are supposed to unscrew or just pull off ? (I have tried both ways but they are F T and I don't want to bust them)

There's are methods to my madness!!! I'm not sure what the methods are but there's definitely madness in them
