Maximum weight on roof
« on: Mar 23rd, 2010, 9:12pm »

I have a Scorpio estate with roof rails. Does anyone know what the maximum weight is that can be carried across the rails on the roof?

I need to shift an old table tennis and it's pretty heavy. It does split in two, so I can take one half at a time. I only need to travel about a couple of miles, but don't want to harm my treasured Scorpio!

Any advice welcome.

hi there

if you are using the ford roof bars, they are rated to 75kg (not the car's roof rails).

a lot of after market bars are only rated to 50kg, so beware!

Simmo.
On page 96 of the Scorpio owners hanbook 1994 2nd edition,it states that on an estate with integral roof rails, the maximum load is 100kg evenly distributed over the side or cross rails. In the case of specially built vehicles with shortened roof rails,40kg.
Lower down the page it states that the maximum permissible roof load is 75kg,EXCEPT ON THE ESTATE MODEL WITH INTEGRAL ROOF RAILS  Cool

hi guys

i need to dis-agree with the handbook (and you Wink).

i think it's a misprint in the book as afaik, most larger fords are rated at 75kg (including their roof bars).

bottom line is would you want to go very far with 75-100kg on the roof? the op is only going to the dump(?) so it shouldn't be an issue.

Andrew.
Whether or not the Scorpio handbook is incorrect,if you look at it logically,100kg is only four of those little bags of spuds, which is not much for a big car with a proper roof load system,or if you like,a 16stone bloke.I personally would have no qualms at all about 100kg on the top, bearing in mind the increased roll tendency.I should think Tom has moved his table now,but if you haven't Tom,the most important thing to remember is to strap it down securely, especially the front because the force of lift on a moving load is powerful.
This is the end of my contribution to the roof load discussion which I have approached as an ex haulier and logical man, used to common sense movements.

They just have a wreath rail Stuart,a throwback to the old days when wreaths were properly made by wiring flowers into moss,if you put em up top today they end up with no cards and very few flowers by the time the church is reached  Huh
We have an underdeck of course,so we can take two anyway,to strap another on top would seem a little greedy, unless the deceased happened to be a pilot having his last wish  Wink
