Batteries

My 1998 Ultima estate 2.3L has had battery problems over this winter, mainly because the car is not used very much these days.
I have researched batteries in general and the latest Varta models with the new technology seem a good answer. It seems not only the 12v amperage is important but the amp's that are available when starting.
Any comments pls.

Mine isn't used a lot either, I find I have to put it on a mains charger at least every couple of months and I usually leave it on for 48 hours if it's well down by then.

Also got a little solar panel charger I leave on the back shelf and plugs in the rear cigar socket, but only works in actual direct sunlight. Not a complete solution and just "delays the inevitable" (i.e. putting the mains charger on)

I've fitted a battery master switch in my ex Pete from Hull gas converted 2.3,it doesn't get used enough and was flat within a few days.
The battery for a Scorpio is type 097,but get one with high CCA,they do vary.

Gentlemen
Thank you one and all for your answers.
I did find a simple little device today which, although connected to the mains, provides a constant trickle charge. It's designed to support classic cars etc in exhibitions.
