Bonnet release. Heelp!

Took my 24 valve to my friendly Garage to have the Bank 1 Lambda sensor replaced as I could not release it myself. He did the job saying it was a real pig so I am happy with that. Anyway, I went to open the Bonnet whilst at the Garage only to find that the release cable has jumped out of the catch under the Slam Plate. And that is my dilemma so please please Help with advice as to how to open the Bonnet. I really need to get this sorted asap as I am expecting to have to make a very unhappy journey anytime soon. Mike

Update. I tried to get my hand between the the Bumper and the cross bar, no chance. But I do/did have a spare grill. So I busted the Grill and could then access the 2 bolts securing the "hinge" to the underside of the Bonnet. lifted the Bonnet and released the securing mechanism from the Slam Panel by retracting the release bar. The release cable had jumped outk. I have now incorperated an aternative method of releasing the Bonnet as a fail safe untill I can replace the Cable. . Note: Mark around the Bracket secuting the mountings to the Bonnet so that re-fitting the Bracket is easy and accurate. Mike

I put the little rubber grommet back in where the cable goes through the latch but there's about inch and a half play in the cable" Had a look at mine today, I think that's normal. The plastic grommet bit is the thing that stops the cable coming out of the notch. If it's loose could be glued in. If it's gone completely, as in Tim_lusername's pictures, then cable ties is all there is!!

My cable has a lot of play as well. Both of my plastic cable locators are in place, but I wouldn't be happy with bashing my car to get under the bonnet. So, this very morning I have rigged-up a manual release from the front of the car, you would need to know where it is to use it, but it works fine with a wire coat-hanger!

to take up slack..(there is no adjustment that i can see) simply secure a wide tie wrap around the slack cable/wire itself at the catch end...i have some wide releasable tie wraps about 10mm across.one was enough to sort the issue If there is too much slack constantly pulling hard on the handle to release the catch is going to pull the crimp off the end of the cable eventually.

I like the coat hanger idea! As a matter of interest the old 1980's BMWs I had, had an "emergency" release, involved undoing a couple of bolts IIRC using a long socket or somesuch inserted through the radiator grill

I had BMW's in the early 80's. My fav' was an E12 530. It was actually a 528, but I put a 730 engine in it after 273K miles. The previous owner was an 'airport taxi'. I had a 635 latterly, it just wasn't as comfortable as the E12.

I had a problem opening the bonnet quite some time ago with my 2,3. After reading this thread I started to wonder if the engine compartments are so different between 24V and DOHC. What I mean is that I was able to release the bonnet by removing the cover beneath engine and then just simply reaching up between radiator and engine. If I remember correctly, the way to open it was to fit hand between rad and intake pipe and the just feel around and move finger ... bonnet open. Anyway, at least 2,3 owners do not need to worry if the cable gets broken
