hello folks ,could anyone out there tell me what the the best product is to prime weld joints on a car .The joints will be underneath in places that would not get painted and clear coated .I have got a tin of black shultze to spray on the welded area but have been told the welds need a primer ( etching primer ) to stop the shultze from peeling of .I am unsure what to use ,would a red oxide be good enough or is there a specific product to use .  regards david

Hiya David. Red oxide is a pre  primer rust inhibitor ( sort of a posh primer ). Most motor factors will stock 'acid etch primer'. It's primary use is to get a good bite onto bare metal before the primer & top coat gose on. It goes something like this... Etch primer, primer ( use red oxide if you wish ), top coat & clear coat to finish. The isopon primer Gozz mentioned is good stuff & i would recomend it to anyone. Almost like galvanising in a can. The surface you are treating has to be spotless before you apply it though, as any surface contaminants will prevent the primer covering properly & moisture will get behind it & rust will thrive. In damp conditions i often use a hair drier to warm up the metal in an attempt to get rid of any moisture that you cannot see. Hope this helps... Craig Smiley
