Dexron ll or Dexron lll

I know the manual says Transmission fluid should be dexron lll but I have some cans of dexron ll on the shelf. Now being miserley I am very tempted to top up with what i've got?? Am I likely to have more problems?

Considering the price of a can of ATF and then the cost and hassle of having to replace a gearbox I don't think I would risk it !!!

Agree with Mike on that, it's cheaper than engine oil. Somebody once said the difference was among others in electrical conductivity (there are documented cases of experiments dropping a computer in DXIII for oil cooling). I would save it for a power steering oil change perhaps. But DXII and DXIII do mix, you can top up a DXII box safely with DXIII.

The viscosity bit is probably the most important.
Also, "Dexron" is just a General Motors trade name

Thats just a bewildering array of Fluid! So now theres dexron llll  If it wasn't the low mileage car I'd use it up, as it has to be cleaner fluid!

Note also the comment about what's written on the bottle, most of it is just "marketing blurb"
I think at the end of the day it's basically oil, it doesn't have "magical properties". Leave it in for 5 years and it's just turned to mush, same as if you never changed the engine oil.
I'd try it, can't be that much difference between them, if the gearbox works OK then fine. Bearing in mind our cars are > 10 years old now, so the transmissions aren't that sophisticated compared to some modern types, or so the manufacturers would have us believe.
Like Honda, Toyota etc. insist you must use "their fluid", it's not their fluid they didn't make it, an oil company did, who also makes all the others.
Sorry that turned into a bit of a min-rant
