Engine VM37B / Scorpio 1997 will not start
« on: Sep 9th, 2010, 1:50pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

I have a Scorpio 2,5 TD, engine VM 37B, I bought without keys. I have managed, thanks for the help, to bypass the starter problem and the starter runs OK.
Now I find that no fuel reaches the injectors. I thought the cut off valve was the small black box on the fuel filter/pump mounting bracket and am running a fuel line from a bottle below the car and direct to the pump. Doesn´t help.

Will I need a pre-pump??

I cannot see a cut off valve on the rear of the injection pump. Either it isn´t there, although it sits there on three other injection pumps from Scorpios I have in store, or it is very well disguised. I cannot ever see a cable going there...

Last February I had a memorable trip ending several meters from the road in very deep snow - no damages whatsoever (!!!) - but that stopped the engine.

There is a cut off mechanism in the boot I have been told: how can I find it and how can I reset it??
I there a way to bypass all problems and feed the cut off valve on the injection pump with 12V.

Had I seen it, if it´s there, I could have just put a cable there, but as I said – I cannot see a cut off solenoid...

Many thanks in advance.

Krister  Huh

PS. I am running the site http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/VM-dieselengine-group/ DS.

I have just been told that one cut off breaker/switch sits in the lock to the rear hatch - which I have removed when I took out the lock to have a key made... How to do to reset??  Huh

hi there

you only get fuel cut off trip switches on petrol models, not on the diesels.

One message has been removed. From what I saw there is a similar gadget sitting up to the right, partly behind the loudspeaker. Could that be it?
Quite correctly it was not where it sits on a petrol driven Scorpio.
I have not found back to the proper site...

The one behind the speaker is the location for an Estate car. As Andrew says they are not fitted to Diesel cars. The handbook has the details Here

The switch is there OK - but had not cut off.  YES - it IS a diesel!

GREAT that you sent the pages from the instruction manual. Thanks a lot!

I am getting more and more impressed by the enormous knowledge in this group!  Smiley Smiley

And I am getting more and more confused. Huh Huh

Do I need a pump to feed the injection pump?

Or how can I bypass every obstacle and feed the cut off solenoid on the injection pump - if there is one. There is no way to see if there is one or not...

I have now installed a tube/hose to the intake on the manual fuel pump, leading to a 10 litre diesel container, installed a new fuel filter and managed to get fuel to the injection pump - but no longer. Embarassed Huh
This indicates that either there is something wrong with the pump OR the shut off valve on the pump doesn´t open. The later could be because the bypass of wiring I have done only fixes the starter OR that there is something wrong with the famous wiring loom...  I still have not been able to see either the valve or the cable for it...
ALL suggestions very welcome!

Of course a possibility - but until I have checked every other possibility that one does not exist in my mind.

Should that be the case I have three more pumps lying around - and the special tool to take off the gear from the pump without dismantling the front... However it´s a messy operation.

I´ll engage someone to run the starter while I inject petrol in the air intake. Maybe that can get the engine running - and scare the pump to work...

After that I´ll take off as little as possible from the pump, if the engine has not started, in order to get access to cut off solenoid on the pump - it must be there!

If you have no keys then the PATS will not allow it to start, even if you bypass the starter and pour diesel into it.

Check the PATS light on the dash, although if you are bypassing just the starter and not the ignition switch you may not even see a code.

Ah that's a point, forgot that. I assumed (wrongly) that had already been got around somehow.

If not, PATS will not allow it to run!

Need a key that's coded to the car.

This is getting more and more confusing! Huh

From one of you on this list, I have, in confidence, been told how to bypass the PATS and when I did was I was suggested to do the starter started to work.

Could the information I received be insufficient??

Ah so you have bypassed the PATS and not just the starter motor?

So you are trying to start it now from the ignition switch?
