Wiring

Changed the plugs on my P reg 2.3 Ultima and found the dreaded fried wiring - carefully replaced everything & added a couple of bits tape and, thankfully, car still run 'perfectly'.
Would it be feasable to make a short harness back to sound wire using a 5-pin plug & socket?
I'm guessing a new harness would cost a fortune and be difficult to fit without a carlift.
What is the usual solution to this problem/

It’s the fuel shut off loom, not cheap:

Some people repair theirs. The plugs were crumbling on mine as well as most of the wires so repairing seemed pointless.

You can replace most from above you just need to get under for a couple of the plugs, removing the oil filter makes it easier to do those two.

Details here:

Replacing it significantly improved the changes on the autobox for my car.

For what it's worth here's my own loom repair:

Now 5 years old, cost nothing as I already all the stuff. All soldered into the original (cut back to good) with heat shrink sleeving, plus heat resistant sleeving (red [fibreglass based]) on the most at risk wires. Note also use of reflective aluminium tape.

PS I also leave off the plastic cover to give the heat a better chance to escape, at least in the Summer

Appendix ~ originally I did have a multi-pin plug and socket to mate to the orignal loom as well but ended up hard soldering in the end, didn't seem any point and just one more thing that could go wrong

Tip ~ ends of original wires quite tarnished so all strands need scraping clean very thoroughly then dipped into liquid soldering flux before tinning with solder.

Thanks for the aditional info and advice Mike H. Youv'e given me the nudge to have a go myself.

I've got a piece of harness from a scrapper (it was on the bottom of a pile of three other cars, so very limited access) from almost the same point as yours.

I noticed that there are two wire sizes use in this piece of harness 23 strands of 0.2mm & 30 strands of 0.2mm - I intend to used the 'thicker' throughout.

I'm familiar with soldering and the need for cleanliness and I take your point regarding the plug/socket.

Thanks again for your guidance.

I was lucky only needed to cut back to the injector plugs housing, so was easy to do in situ, and my plugs were OK, however the CMP sensor pair were affected as well.

NB found this for fibreglass sleeving, but haven't trying buying from this web site though:
