Centre Vent Temps

Driving at about 50 MPH with a warm engine I used a digital thermometer on the centre vents, fan on slow but not auto and got the following readings: Display on: HI -- 76C 29 -- 68C 28 -- 54C 27 -- 40C 26 -- 29C 25 -- 18C Anything below and I got cold air. Is this telling me anything? Tony

Did you leave it for a while between measurements Tony? Does the temperature from the vents reduce/increase to reach the required temperature over time? I would think the fan on the slow setting will be making it harder for the sytem to achieve the set temperature as quickly as it could if on auto. Those figures suggest the cabin temperature was around 25-26 and that the increase in setting resulted in higher temp being produced from the vents. If it were sitting at slightly above 25 then setting it to 25 would have produced the colder air? It sounds like its running ok, possibly the temperature sensor could do with a clean, they draw in a tremendous amount of dust which may be affecting its operation.

Hi Stuart No I was altering the setting fairly quickly, from start to finish over about 3 miles. Where is the temp sensor to be found? Tony

Between the two large dials, blow it out from the back of the panel http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aircon.htm Quick tip : When you remove the panel to blow it out do it OUTSIDE the car!!

| Shouldnt drop significantly Rich, is your thermostat ok? have you got one? does it take a while to warm the engine up?

Hi Tony, centre vents on mine start off with warm air then after a while will start to blow unheated air - could be because sensor reckons you've reached required temp. Rich: with temp guage - assuming it's working ok - have you checked the inlet & outlet pipes for the matrix. If all's ok (no blockages) they should BOTH be hot (just about gripable for a few seconds). I've got issues with my matrix and occasionally the guage alternates between ok (middle of range) to low. A year or so ago in an attempt unblock my heater matrix when I used hot radiator flush pumped exclusively through the heater matrix I also later checked air vent temperatures. The heater matrix has first call on any circulating water and the air vent temperature is apparently very dependent on the engine load. Going down hill and the engine fuel consumption and heat output falls to next to nothing and so the air vent temperature also falls, conversely the air temperature increases dramatically when the engine is under load and burning high levels of fuel

Can’t speak for other models, but with regard the 2.3 the coolant goes solely through the matrix until the stat starts to open then it goes through the radiator & the matrix via separate routes – so not really “first call”. I’ve just changed my matrix & stat & the needle on the gauge goes to the centre & stays there, the heat output doesn’t vary with the load. Paul, the behaviour of the centre vents cooling before the outer vents is down to some deflectors fitted on the flaps over the matrix it causes the centre vents to cool first for some reason (as the flaps move to allow more cool air to blend with the hot air as it gets up to temp), this is less apparent when the distribution is set to windscreen/footwells (although that wasn’t so before I changed the matrix & recovered the distribution flaps).
