coming home tonight the heater was nice and hot even with LO selected!!! it seemed to happen over the lat hour of driving as up till then it had been fine.  Will check tommorow as have to go out again.

Bu-ut, coolant is passing through the matrix all the time isn't it? It's air flaps that decide how much enters the interior. (?)
 
It's worth noting that in warm weather I often have the experience that if it's been driven for a bit, then parked for a bit, I typically get a blast of hot air next time until the warm air that's been collected in the dash while it's been parked has blown out, before getting cool air through again.
