It's very easy to open from inside, once you disassemble it enough

Does the 'button' push in?. Often the button will seize as a result of moisture, crud, etc and the use of WD 40 will sometimes clear it.  Smiley

When you push it in, does it make a noise?  I.e. brief whirring, leccy motor type noise, but not very loud. If not then motor is N/O for some reason, but I thought the key overrides that, or am I wrong?

Just tried mine it’s the other way if the buttons stuck in the key won’t turn – the button needs to be fully out, is the key turning?

Yes, key is purely mechanical.

Yes but the motor has to run to release the catch, i.e. when you press the button. While it's locked, all that means is that the controller ignores the button being pressed.

Key not going fully around suggests key and/or lock are worn out, so barrel is not released to turn, that's most often the usual reason. Could just be your key / lock have decided to stop working at this precise moment. Do you have any spare keys to try?

And to reiterate the earlier question:

A. while car is unlocked, does pressing the button release it?
B. if not this time, did it do it OK before?

Forgive me for being pedantic:

A. did that work before (pressing the boot button - on the boot lid, not the remote);

B. does it make a brief whirring noise when you do that, despite that it doesn't open.

I'm trying to tie down whether there's also an additional electrical / motor problem.

Although if the actual release is mechanically seized up the motor couldn't move it I presume (?) (I'm asking the other experts Grin )

C. how many degrees of rotation does the key move. Should be 90 degrees from vertical

the key turns about 90 degree,s i reckon, i looked at it again this morning and i,m not sure it is all the way out to be honest, it looks just under half an inch out, is that about right?
  and it opened b4 with the remote and with the button with car unlocked, so i dont know why it does,nt now, and i dont hear a whirring sound either, but then i never did..

If the key turns 90 degrees it should open are you sure it’s not just the seal stuck? They can get surprising well glued shut sometimes after using wax shampoo.

That's often happening to me, don't open it for a week and it needs a hefty persuasion of digits inserted under the edge. Although a short while ago I smeared vaseline all around the seal so hasn't been that bad lately.
