Does my Scorpio have Air Con?

Do I have 'proper' Air Conditioning? I have a 1997 Scorpio 2.3 Ghia-X. The temperature dial on the dashboard is marked "A/C" but there is NO on/off button for a/c. There is a label in the engine compartment that says "Ford Air Conditioner . . . . . must be refilled with R134" etc. etc. but there does not seem to be any of the tell-tale nozzles to refill it . . . . . . . Any ideas? Thanks.

You should be able to push that button in and if there is sufficient gas in the system & all the sensors are happy it will engage the compressor. The light should illuminate on the dial. Matt

Have a look here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/accomp.htm There’s a picture of a compressor, if your auxiliary belt doesn’t go round one of these your car either didn’t have it or the AC has been removed.

Thanks for the replies. The dial does indeed press in (you learn something new every day!) but there is no light . . . . . . . There does look like a compressor buried in the engine compartment, so I guess I'll have to have the system re-gassed and see what happens. Any other pointers most welcome! Thank you.

A quick test to see if the compressor cuts in is with the blower fans on push in the button and see if the revs drops slightly. If they do then that's the usual sign the compressor is running as it's a drag on the engine. Another way is once you've found the compressor itself, switch on the AC and see if the whole of the pulley (centre part aswell) is turning. If not then it's probably due a regas. Matt

I always had the heater fan running and then pushed the switch. Matt
