Temperature Guage Sensor

Hi all, I have tried to send this before but perhaps got the wrong forum. I am having a problem with my temperature guage (1995 2.0L 16v dohc RHD) in that the guage keeps going straight to the top although no signs of overheating are present. I have taken the car to my local garage here in France and am told there is a problem with the sensor. Exactly what I am not sure but it is apparently some sort of connector on the sensor itself that is faulty. I doubt it is the wiring from the temp guage and am inclined to buy a complete new sensor unit. Firstly can anyone tell me where the sensor is located on the engine block and is there a diagram of the sensor and its connections available anywhere? Replacement sensors are readily available in the UK (not here though) but there are different sorts with differently coloured connector heads eg green, black etc . I need to find out exactly what to get so any help would be appreciated.
