Hi Guys, My keys are beginning to misbehave and they are starting to struggle to turn. I have a spare ignition barrel and key from my old car and tried that but it would not start. I know it's to do with the pats system but is there something else I should change over to make it start and recognise the new parts. Cheers Lee

Lee. It sounds as though Pats is not recognizing the new key. There is a module around the lock which is the 'link' to the PATS. The easiest way is to replace the 'innards' of the existing lock as detailed Here. The crucial thing is to do it BEFORE the key fails OR you won't be able to turn it to Position 1 which is essential in order to depress the detent spring and thus allow the barrel to come away on the key. If you take the key with you the dealer will read the key for you.

Mike, The module your talking about; is that the removable black thing that rings the barrel that plugs in and if I use that from my old car as well as with the new barrel will it work?? Lee

Lee, That is the unit BUT I imagine it is coded to the main unit in the car thus swopping them would not work. In the absence of a more informed reply I guess you can only try it!.

I would pull the metal key part out of the "new" key and glue it into the plastic fob part of the "old" key.
This would allow you to use the spare ignition barrel and start the car as the important PATS gubbins are inside the plastic fob

I've been into this in depth with my Puma.
On your cars there should be a separae PATS module, it's only a handful of the very last cars that had PATS built into the ECU, unfortnately that system is fool proof and needs re coding 
Yours should be workable
Near the ECU there is a module inside a steel frame and it's labelled PATS lol,
If you swap that the new key will then work
This type is not coded to the ECU
The ring around the lock just reads the key and makes no difference
The module is the bit that sends "KEY OK or NOT OK" digital signal to the ECU. It just plugs in.

Taking all replies into account, changing the innards of the barrel seems the best bet. Fords have them at 19.50inc vat.
Dave, could do as you suggest but then I only have one key for my old car, I have the red and one black with the new. Cheers Lee

In that case, changing the lock guts is your best long term repair ,
At the same time I'd code a couple of new keys onto the system and use them, chucking the "old" black one away

OMG, The worst thing happened yesterday. I found a ford dealership in rayleigh that had a barrel kit so took a ride down and bought one. Decided to shop at Lakeside until it shut at 9.00pm. Went to the car, got in and found that I could not turn the key as the steering lock was on and the barrel wouldn't let me turn the key far enough to disengage it  After frantic attempts for an hour to get it to work and the covered park lights going off, I am in the dark and going nowhere. I had Mike's (Simmo's) earlier post ringing in my ears)!!! A call to the AA and a pretty short wait, he arrived and left in less than three minutes A pair of molegrips and a bit of force, the key turned and the car came to life, (his first thought was that the key had sheared) but it hadn't. When I got home at 12.30am, I turned the car off but left the key in the 1 position and took the barrel out straight away. This morning with the help of this sites instructions, I now have a new barrel that fits both keys without a problem
This should be a warning to those who are possibly having the same problem and not to leave it  Lee

The other thing is that the aftermarket key that was given to me with the red key when I bought the car was badly cut. When I bought the new barrel, the bloke in the ford dealership checked my black key and found that it needed shimming in places to match the original red key. He did that for free, such a good bloke hence both my keys now fit. Lee
