Looking at improving performance, towing & MPG on my 97 Ultima which is a 2.5td manual. Has anyone fitted a tuning box or had a remap done on the ECU. Cheers, Darren

Hi mate Thered not a lot of support for the older tds, they dont even use a ford ecu. Your best bet would be to google the VM forums, failing that, have a look on the landrover and jeep forums, the same vm was used in those cars which have a good off road fan base. Perhaps they could point you in the right direction Matt

Cheers Matt, I will take your advice. I have found a couple of companies that do a tuning box that fits onto the Scorpio, both boast of improved performance, torque & MPG ( but then they would, wouldn't they). I'll let you know how I get on.

Beware of some of them quick add-ons boxes, are just resistors in series with the injectors or something, if they do anything at all, popular concencus says they will just make consumption worse. Just money rip-offs basically.

Yeah that was my thoughts Mike. I've checked out some different forums & they get mixed reviews, but on the whole, remapping gets the nod, but I'm not certain that is a good investment on what is a 11 year old motor. She may have to go as she is going to get ruined towing my race car. Not the towing, but all the crap I have to carry around in her

Hi Darren, changing the differential would be the cheapest/easiest solution. it will increase performance, towing ability and mpg whilst towing but will lower the mpg at higher speeds you diesel should have a 3.36 diff fitted If you fit a 3.64 from one of the V6 Scorpios (straight swap) or a 3.91 from a 2.3 16v (need to swap drive pinions) it'll be a LOT better for towing. I have a 24v fitted with a 4.27 diff and around town it gives a lot better mpg than it did with the standard diff, its great for towing with and its VERY fast the downside is that on motorway runs the mpg is higher But you can't have everything
