And another silly thing iv'e done! i bought a 24v estate just before last xmas, which after driving it home i was surprised i made it! so long story short i decided to scrap it, my son said one of his banger mates would have it with, son doing welding on it first, after i got a couple of alloys back and new rear shocks i put on it back as well, my concern is that son says not to tell dvla i scrapped it yet as when the car has finnished being wrecked it is easier for the guy to scrap it,with log book, i know that its been off road since and not driveable on any road, highly modified, is there any risk to me from dvla as i have only notified dvla that it is sorned off road? Any advice again please, Bob

It is true that cars are difficult to "weigh in" now without a log book. Risk to you is only if it goes on the road, then you will be liable for any no tax, no insurance, speeding or parking tickets................. Personally I'd get his name on the log book ASAP, as a transfer of ownership, then he'll have the log book and can scrap it whenever he likes. That is the "correct procedure" in this case. HTH Dave

I saw something on the Moto Guzzi forum yesterday, somebody bought a bike that was SORN, thought well I'm got to need to work on it for a while before taxing to go back onto the road, so the exisitng SORN can just carry on as it is, apparently not, next thing he knows he's going to be fined £60 for not SORN-ing it again as the new owner under his own name & address I.e. seems like SORN's become invalid if vehicle moves to different keeper & different address. Fine is 'only' £30 if paid quickly within X days, can't remember exactly, a month maybe. Basically he had to pay up. Or rather his wife did as he was out working in the Middle East when he found all this out.

PS: apparently the blurb about it is on the DVLA web site, IF you can find it (and if you've got Internet access)

As soon as ownership changes the DVLA MUST be informed and if the vehicle is currently on a SORN then the SORN declaration MUST be renewed by the new owner otherwise as stated you are liable for a fine/seizure and crushing.......... Quote:Buying a vehicle that has a SORN If you buy a vehicle that already has a SORN made by the previous keeper, that SORN will come to an end on the date you buy the vehicle. You must make a new SORN if you are keeping the vehicle untaxed off the public road. You cannot transfer a SORN. |
