Squeaky engine bay

Hi,
noticed a short squeak (like a sparrow) every 20 seconds or so from what appears to be from around the air con compressor/tensioner. Became almost constant a short while after I turned air con on but seemed to have disappeared after a restart.
I think I've recently heard it before but this is 1st time I've actually lifted the bonnet for a listen.

Any thoughts?

Happy new year

Hi Paul,

Probably not your problem as it’s a different area but just in case.
From time to time I get a squeak from the heater blower motor (but it’s not obvious where it’s coming from whilst driving), it only happens with the aircon on & usually at low fan speed it takes a while to die away when I turn the aircon off.

I assume it’s down to the dryer/colder air passing over the motor bearings with aircon on.

All the best
Dave

try giving the belt a quick squirt of WD 40 and see if it disappears. Belts can squeak and a drop of light oil can stop it. DO NOT PUT A LOT ON.
Otherwise it can be a bearing on th tensioner or the compressor itself.

Aye, I would say the tensioner.   My Tensioner has squeaked on cold mornings for the first couple of miles since I've had the car.   Although it does get rather colder up here!   Just like you say though, like a wee bird squawking.

Is it possible by listening with the bonnet open to find more exactly where it's coming from? Trouble with these things though you need it doing it repeatedly Grin

I suppose you could use something like a stethoscope but wouldn't fancy it close to the belts with the engine running
