Fred, not being an 'auto' man I can only think that the major issue is the actual condition of the oil. If you check it is the correct colour? does it smell 'burnt' ? are you having any problems with the box?. When was it last changed?.

Don't think topping up is an expected maintenance thing, dip stick handle is not coloured yellow like the other user-allowed things to look at and check (?) If level's consistently dropping must be a leak somewhere? BTW the level must only be checked to see if it's correct while engine running. Probably why it's not a user check, that's maybe getting a bit too involved
