Lee. What's going on then ? you can't readily remove the sump in situ, the pistons don't come past the crank, they must come up GOZZ.

Gozz. If you look at Lee's other post re the head gasket I think the info you want is there. Now it's here!. Hi All, With the info on here and the advice given, I managed to remove the head, inlet manifold still attached, and found that all is not well. The gasket had definitely gone, between pots 2 and 3, the third piston at BDC and with about half an inch of water sitting in it. Once I had removed the water, I noticed that the piston head had been eaten, about half an inch missing. No scoring noticeable so maybe could be worse. So I have a question!! Can the sump be removed, partly or fully, so the piston can be removed from the bottom? I ask this because I can't remove the engine block. If the answer is no, then I am about to lose another beloved scorpio Thanks in advance. Lee

Hi Mike and Mike, Firstly, dont have the equipment, the space. I do have the time but for monetary reasons it might not be worth it! Head gasket and bolts already purchased, (quite cheaply before finding out I had a problem), but would still need lifting gear, new piston head, oil, antifreeze, tensioner plunger etc. Hi Gozz, Yes I knew the pistons have to be removed from the top but wanted to know if they can be removed with the block in situ Lee

Yes piston can be removed, easy job to drop the front s/frame down, support engine, disconnect steering u/j, disconnect engine mtgs, then remove bolts from s/frame. Will give access to bottom of engine.

Thats the same way i drop engines out by dopping the subframe cross member at the back off 4 large bolts in the sub frame the you can either drop the wish boned off or undo the top mounts some beefy chunks of wood accross yhe inner edge of the wings and some good rope arount the engine and undo the engine mounts and steering uj and lowet it down on a jack as your leavimg engine in try and get a axel stand under the bell housing help hold it up

| Think I've covered prety much all of it above, start with the car as high as you can get it on a pair of axle stands, the frame will drop down far enough to get the sump off & allow you to undo big end bolts.

So what Lee wants to do is get sump off to undo big-end bolts, then piston can come out the top. Which, apparently, it can only do anyway. How did the piston crown damage occur? And how deep is it actually?

Mike, A good bit of the top edge has just been "eaten" away, with a little bit of depth, when the car broke down on the A12. It looks like the gasket went between two and three. When the head was removed number three had about half an inch of water in it!!
