Help Changing Drivers Side Door Window

Can anyone advise me, is it beyond the skill of an amateur mechanic to change the side window of my beloved Scorpio Ultima. Whilst parked in my local station the other day some a***hole scratched the drivers side window quite badly. My car being a Cat-D, I can only get third party insurance so I am unable put it through Auto-glass or the like. I would like to change it myself to keep costs down but never having any experience of changing windows I am a little concerned I may screw it up, leaving me at the mercy of expensive window fitters. Please help.

The windows manual is here: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/windwsmanl.htm Might be cheaper to change the door if you can source the right colour than get a fitter to change the glass.

Pede. If you follow the link that Tompion put up you'll be ok. Once the door card is off and you've got access to the inner door it is straightforward. No doubt a member on here will be able to help you source a replacement glass. Peeling back the polythene membrane, or cutting out the access 'portholes' needs to be done neatly as they need to be sealed up on completion. The black bitumen which secures it to the door skin is a pain and I find the best way is to locate the access holes, cut cleanly with a craft knife along three sides leaving a flap on one edge and then reseal with tape on completion. Good luck. The door trim removal details are Here. Just read the details and make sure you locate all of the screws etc some of which are concealed behind trim inserts but readily identifiable.

If you haven't taken the door trim off before it is a bit of a mystery to start with, but just needs a logical approach, and keeping your temper There may be plastic snappers holding it on as well around the middle area. Not had any problem yet peeling the mastic stuff off, and just sticks back on afterwards, no cutting or tape involved. Yet!

Pede, Once the trim has been removed, removing the window is a straight forward job even for a novice and money saved doing it yourself

Hi All, Thanks for the flood of advice, I think I might follow the suggestion from Tompion, and try to source a door with the glass complete to save me any problems. Best Site on the net, For one of the best car Ford ever made.
