crashing into the group

First I have joined this group not because I have a Scorpio ( sorry about that ) but because I have bought a car with a Scorpio 2.9i engine and 4 speed auto box and this group seems to be the place where the "knowledge" is. My first 2.9 which goes along with my other cars with the 2.8 and 3.0 ford engines. I am on a learning curve and so far have found that the wrong plugs were fitted - taped ones in. So a couple if questions if you don't mind. Is it recommended to replace the timing chain after Huh miles - mine is just short of 100k. The big question does anyone have a ECU for sale for the auto box system. I should explain we like to tour Europe when we can and we carry as many spares as possible ( the harder to get ones anyway ) and the possibility of the ECU failing when away stops us using this car - I have already bought a new spare dizzy. Finding what I really need may be impossible so any ECU I can fit to get us home will do then I can get the original repaired - I don't know if the ECU is that specific - can the car can run on something else. Bog standard engine and box by the way no "extra" valves or electrics - fitted ECU is 86GB-12A650-B2A.

Yes I will do that but as I also had a question about the timing chain I thought I would put the two together.

As I expect you are aware the chains on most 24 valve BOBS rattle on start up, mine has always done it. I think there is no set time to change them as they can go for a long time with the start up rattle. I think they are very hard to get hold of now, chains and guides, but some one may know where you might get some.

Is this 2.9i engine a 12valve [ ...just bought a spare dizzy...Huh ] or 24valve Huh
If 24valve, is it a BOA - Mk3 Granada Scorpio or a BOB - Scorpio '95-> Huh
Timing chain parts for BOA & BOB are different.
If your ECU p/n starts with 86GB* and with the mention of a dizzy, I suspect you have a 12valve engine from a Mk3 Granada Scorpio or possibly a Sierra - the timing chain on these engines are quite short and are normally very reliable. Earlier 2.8 V6 used timing gears, not a chain - on these the larger of the 2 gears has a reputation for stripping the fibre teeth.
If the engine is from a Scorpio '95-> it would be pretty much the same as the 12 valve version which was carried over from the Mk3 Granada Scorpio although would have thought the ECU p/n would have updated to something starting with 95GB...something tells me the earlier ECU would be for an engine without a catalytic convertor but these became compulsory in around 1992 ?

Its a 12 valve and I have a Granada/Scorpio Hayes manual for it, I know about the wheel in the 2.8 and I am going to change mine within the next few thou miles - the 3 ltr is much worse and most owners now fit steel or aluminium wheels and get rid of the fibre ones. Do you know if there is more than one ECU I can use or is it not possible to use anything other than the original type.

Doubt the ECU from a 2.0 will work with a 2.9...
If you want a 2.9 ECU you could try Sierra Shack - think they are located in Wakefield Huh
