P0158 Downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Voltage High - Bank No. 2. Downstream sensors are said not to influence emissions.

Downstream sensors are there to monitor the condition of the cats, so in theory you could have a broken cat and not know about it. broken cats can affect emissions.

I had a feeling that might be the case. My scanner is a U380 not sure of the brand and that was the only code that showed. I cleared if then went for a 20 mile blast down the motorway and the code didn't come back. Does that tell me anything? How would I know which (if either) cat is not working. I will have to chance the MOT now as I wont have time to change a cat. Tony

| I don't think so. If I remember well, after clearing such an emssion related code, which in newer cars should trigger the motor control indicator, you need to complete ten full OBD cycles, before it reoccures. One OBD-cycle starts with cold engine and ends with a warm engine after exceeding a certain speed value and control unit has reached closed loop condition. I played that game recently with a KA of 2004. Motor control indicator showed up and MOT failed although emission were below limits. After two weeks and having cleared the code directly before I drove to MOT station KA passed MOT without problems. Emissions again were well below limits. After nine times travel to work, indicator came up again. This shows me that there is a mismatch in the specification of (downstream) Lambda probes and the efficiency of catalytic converters. In my case the probe warns too early. I think such tolerance problems are well known to every engineer. I assume to prevent expensive legal quarrels in US and high pollution penalties, car manufactures choose the safe side. Regards Armin
