possible battery failure

Hi guys,
My 2.3 estate drove and started ok all day, parked up at home and one hour later went to start up and nothing.
All i got was a load of clicking and instruments spinning , i think it could be the battery, but can anyone tell me how to check if the alternator is working  ok.
Please tell me in laymans terms, i have a volt meter but not sure what to do.
Don't want to buy new battery if it is the alternator.
Cheers

If the needles flick round it is normally a sign of the battery failing.
If you check in the technical section on this site there is a way of checking the battery voltage on the LCD by following a few simple instructions.
Sadly batteries do just seem to die suddenly these days - had to replace the battery on my Jeep recently, fine one day, dead as a Dodo the next.

The page Mike refers to is here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm

Remember though that the needles always flick round next time you turn on the ignition after doing this even if it's several days later & you've forgotten you did an instrument reset.

Easy to convince yourself the battery is going using this method of checking the voltage if you forget they WILL flick round next time.
