When MIG welding the car to just put a wee patch in the rear wheel-arch, what should I disconnect?    Just the battery and Alternator??

I use a ,sealey surge protector, you dont have to disconect anything, Up to now no problems.

put the earth clamp as close to where you are welding as possible,
 
take the boot side carpets off and keep a water source near, there is sealant in the arches that burns well, and you will only see / access the flames from inside the boot (from personal experience   Roll Eyes)
