Help with Speedo Sensor Replacement Needed

I'm trying to get a replacement speedo sensor for my Scorpio Ultima 2.0 16v Automatic. It's been quite difficult and I am now trying to get a replacement from a few cars on eBay that are breaking for spares. Only problem is they are different engine sizes so have different differentials. Is it possible to remove the pinion gear from my old sensor and fit it to any replacement I buy if it comes from a different size engine? Also how easy is it to remove and refit the pinion? Any thoughts or advice? I won't be doing this myself, the local auto electrician company will be refitting the replacement part. Thanks for any help or advice. Phil

Have a read through this: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=dis play;num=1267895854;start= On the second page it says "There are two designs of pinion and clip. Old clip+old pinion are together functionally equivalent with the new clip+new pinion, and can be installed on either the old or the new style VSS." It doesn't appear to be difficult to change pinions. Wasn't the one on ebay from Germany any good?

Hi Tompion, thanks for the heads up. The German eBay listing had closed by the time I was ready to proceed, and I couldn't find any other similar listings. I believe I could have used the FordpartsUK part but didn't want to pay so much if I could get what I need cheaper. Anyway, I've located a part and I'm just confirming with the seller that the gearbox is automatic and sending him pictures of my part to make sure there's no confusion. Hopefully my speedo will soon be working again! Thanks for your help. Good to know there is help here for Scorpio fans. Phil

Hey Dave, thanks again for all the help you've given me. If the eBay part doesn't work out I will follow up your suggestions. Was really worried I might have come to the end of the road with my Scorpio, but thanks to you and others on this forum I'm sure I can get many more years out of my car. I've had it 13 years now and don't want to give up on it!! Cheers Phil

Hi Tompion, my attempts to clarify that the speedo offered in the eBay listing was for an automatic have drawn a blank. The guy hasn't replied to me so I want to follow up on the speedo sensor listings from Germany that you posted earlier for me. I have just looked, but I can't determine from the listing if they are for manual or automatic gearboxes. I believe there is a difference between the sensors fitted to the manual and auto gearboxes. Do you know if these are for automatic gearboxes or should I message them using Google Translate to try and establish which variant they are? Thanks Phil

Hi Tompion, thanks for your reply. I guess it should be OK as the part number matches. Also I think most Scorpios were automatic, so I'm going to go for it. Need to get something done - getting near my MOT!! Thanks again for all your help. I'll post to this thread what happens!! Cheers Phil
