Cloth v leather

I owned a 2.3 (R) Ghia Saloon for a few years, until she died in April. At the same time I was extremely lucky to find a previously well loved (P) 2.3 Ghia X Estate on ebay in Chichester. I was a little surprised however that the Higher model Ghia X estate had a cloth interior when the Ghia had leather. My question is would the interiors have been options or standard on each car? Could someone please help me with this.

I've just had a quick look through some old Scorpio brochures - it would appear specs and available options for each model changed over the years. When the Scorpio first appeared it looks as though leather trim was only available as an option on the Ultima.

Thanks very much for the speedy reply. What you say makes sense as the Ghia was a newer 'facelift' model and as you rightly pointed out specs change over the years. It would also make sense that leather was 'reserved' for Ultimas at 'P' reg. Especially, as I should have mentioned, that after I bought my estate I was offered the interior of a rusted out red 2.3 Ultima estate, P614MOP which was destined (not by me) for b----r racing. That car had a leather interior which I did salvage for possible later use. Many thanks again.

If you look at used car valuation websites such as Parkers, the Ultima versions each have 2 entries - 1 has LT or LTH in the description which is for the leather option.

Thanks both, for all the help. I read the specs via the link above and inconsistencies between the two cars now make sense. Now the next question is would I be better to fit the leather into the estate or would that be sacrilege?

I didn't want to upset anybody! The leather interior I have was salvaged from an Ultima which was an extremely smart car which looked Fab in leather. Unfortunately the body didn't match the interior and the rust barely held the body together. I simply meant would it be considered advantageous or outrageous to attempt to'upgrade' my car. Particularly when a lot of 'purists' say it is always best to keep any vehicle as original as possible.

Tony, my thoughts are that you should do whatever you want...unless you intend to maintain the car for Classic Car shows etc. when perhaps the 'original' condition may be something the purists would look for. Personally I'd fit the leather and enjoy the comfort that goes with it. If the interior came from an Ultima then it will have electrically operated and heated seats presumably so there may be an issue in wiring these. Not being familiar with Ghia X I therefore raise it simply as a query. Good luck with the car whatever you decide and please let us know how you get on.

I agree with Simmo, go for the leather if it is possible- well worth it . You don't say when the car was made and do you have electrically operated seats now with the cloth?

The car despite being in very good condition would not win any prizes for best in class, plenty of you out there will have much nicer cars. I have had many cars in the past with leather seats and I am more inclined than not to change the interior. Both cars my Ghia X and the unfortunate Ultima are/were 1997 P registered. Regarding the electrics I am probably going to have quite a few headaches. At present the drivers seat is the only one with power and that's limited to up/down only.

You should find a power connector under the carpet for the passenger seat.
